The Gisborne Chinese Association is a member of the New Zealand Chinese Association.
The association started in 1926 when local Chinese migrants saw the need to support their fellow country families settling in a new land in Gisborne
Initially, the first association meeting rooms were upstairs by the town clock. later the members bought a house in Disraeli Street and added a hall to the front of the house.
Many events were held in the hall, including Chinese language school, weddings, Chinese movie nights, church services, mahjong, farewells, birthdays and much more
Our main annual event was a Chinese-style dinner to help raise funds for the operations of the hall.
Today due to fewer members in our community, it is leased out and the rental income is used to maintain and retain our Chinese culture.
We celebrate Chinese New Year at various venues, Ching Ming and Moon Festival.
